Understanding Therapeutic Listening as a Tool in Our Toolbox
By Radie Hain, OTD, OTR/L
As a parent, watching your child struggle with attention, emotional regulation, or sensory processing issues can be overwhelming. There are many therapeutic tools that can assist in these areas and adding therapeutic listening into your toolbox during occupational therapy sessions, or at home, can enhance or assist children in participation and regulation in their day to day activities.
Therapeutic Listening is a sound-based intervention used by occupational therapists to support children with sensory processing challenges, developmental delays, attention issues, anxiety, and more. Therapeutic listening isn’t just about listening to relaxing music, it uses modulated music that is filtered to target specific frequencies to enhance certain outcomes or goals therapist are addressing. The modulated music alternates tone, pitch, frequency, and strength of the varying sounds and music to stimulate the brain and nervous system through the auditory system, promoting better organization and function. The auditory system has connections to various parts of the brain making sound a powerful way to access the nervous system and assist in daily participation and function. When we listen, it impacts not only our overall physiology, but also our behavior.
Using therapeutic listening in correlation with other therapeutic interventions or strategies, this powerful sound-based auditory intervention can assist in engaging the whole-body and addresses sensory integration. This approach helps with improving attention and focus, regulating emotions and work behaviors, supporting motor coordination, enhancing communication and language skills, and supporting sensory integration. The music gives the listener controlled but unique sensory information to trigger attention and activate body movement. Therapeutic listening is especially beneficial for children with sensory differences—targeting the brain and body connection to help children better interpret and respond to the world around them.
- Improved Emotional Regulation
Therapeutic listening helps balance the nervous system, making it easier for children to process emotions and respond more appropriately to frustration, transitions, or sensory overload.
- Better Focus and Attention
The rhythmic, structured nature of the music used helps the brain organize incoming sensory information, leading to improved concentration at school and home.
- Enhanced Auditory Processing
Therapeutic listening can help sharpen auditory discrimination and processing speed, making it easier for children to follow directions and engage in conversations.
- Support for Motor Skills and Coordination
Therapeutic listening works on deep sensory systems, helping improve posture, balance, and motor planning.
- Boost in Language and Communication
Benefit from improved listening skills and clearer brain-body communication.
- More Flexible and Adaptive Behavior
Therapeutic listening can help children feel more grounded, leading to fewer behavioral outbursts and greater adaptability.
- Better Sleep Patterns
Calming effects of the music may help children unwind more easily and stay asleep longer increasing sleep regulation and better sleep hygiene.
- Increased Body Awareness
Therapeutic listening helps enhance proprioception (the sense of body position), improving spatial awareness and movement control.
Therapeutic listening is more than just music—it’s a powerful tool that helps children connect, calm, and grow from the inside out. Whether your child struggles with attention, emotions, or sensory challenges, this approach offers gentle yet meaningful support that combines a mind and body approach. Adding another holistic approach to the toolbox in assisting children achieve success. With the guidance of a trained occupational therapist, therapeutic listening can become a part of your child’s journey toward greater confidence, connection, and success.
Remember: small steps lead to big change. You’re not alone—and support is out there.
